HUMBOLDT — Having gotten the go-ahead to reopen to the public by the province’s reopening plan, the Humboldt Golf Club is preparing for the new season.

Phase I of the plan allows golf courses to resume operations on May 15 with some restrictions.

Corey Schweitzer, the club’s general manager, said they have been preparing for the new season like they would any other year, with staff starting maintenance work on the 18-hole course.

However, while they can get the course ready for golfers, the restaurant and pro shop will not be opening until later phases of the province-wide plan.

Getting out to golf, golfers can expect more spaced out tee times to limit interaction and balls no longer being put into the hole with the cups being above ground, again to limit possible contamination points, Schweitzer said.

Tee times must be spaced 20 minutes apart to avoid congestion, according to regulations laid out by the reopening plan. All players must have a tee time, as no walk-on players will be permitted.

Players must practice social distancing, being at least two metres apart at all times.

With the pro shop closed, even booking and renting equipment will look differently this season, Schweitzer said.

“People are going to have to book either on the phone or online. And we're just putting a system together right now to make that happen a little smoother and easier.”

Staff will also have a stricter cleaning regime but Schweitzer said he won’t need extra staff in order to perform these duties properly.

Even with the extra COVID-19 measures in place, Schweitzer said he still expects a busy golfing season with people taking the opportunity to get outside and drive the ball around.
