HUMBOLDT — Curlers at the Humboldt Uniplex will have new flooring to break in during the upcoming season, with the city tendering out the work for the centre walkway and the west stairwell for the curling rink.

Flooring replacement will consist of half-inch rubber floor with 10 per cent fleck; 28oz. carpet; and new flooring in the west stairwell to match the existing floor on the east stairwell or alternates as approved by the city.

Michael Ulriksen, Humboldt’s director of community and leisure services, said the project is a collaboration between the city and the curling club.

“In the curling rink we got a centre walkway that runs down and splits the six sheets of ice into three. It comes in and out every year as we pull the ice and then use the facility for other activities,” Ulriksen said.

“Just being in and out over the years put that centre walkway into disrepair, so we’ve been talking over the last couple years about getting that replaced.”

The total cost of the work is estimated to be between $10,000 to $20,000, with the curling club contributing to the final cost.

Kevin Kalthoff, the club’s ice technician, said over the years some of the wood boards on the centre walkway have become rotten, and being raised four inches above the ice instead of level was a bit of a tripping hazard.

“It’s pretty old and pretty soon we couldn’t fix it anymore, it’s just too deteriorated. So it was time to do it,” Kalthoff said.

“Everyone’s going to recognize that centre walkway when they come out there because it will be different. It will be safer too.”

The deadline for the work is set for Sept. 24. The ice is planned to be installed in October.
