EAST CENTRAL — Extracurricular school sports in the Horizon School Division have been paused until at least the beginning of January.

The pause began Nov. 16. More information and updates will be shared following the Christmas break.

“As firm advocates for providing opportunities for our students, the decision to pause school sports is not one that is taken lightly. However, at this time, it is a necessary decision,” said Kevin Garinger, the division’s director of education, in a memo to families and staff.

“We have been very fortunate to enjoy school sports so far this year, and our protocols have been effective to mitigate viral transmission. However, our province is seeing a surge in new cases, and we need to act now to reduce some activities that may be a higher risk at this time.”

In the meantime, teams can continue to practice within their schools, with their current teams, if they follow health and safety requirements for their sport found within the division’s Return to Sport Protocol.
