HUMBOLDT — The Horizon School Division is once again applying a portable each for Humboldt Public School and Humboldt Colligate Institute.

Trustees voted to apply to the provincial government for the portables at its Oct. 14 meeting

“We’ve seen some really increased numbers of students at HPS (Humboldt Public). We’ve really had to utilize some of the spaces that really are challenging to have classrooms in and we've had to modify those too,” said Kevin Garinger, the division’s director of education.

“HCI (Humboldt Colligate) challenges us as well in terms of space that’s necessary.”

The request for government-funded portables was also made in 2019 and 2018. Garinger has said in the past the division is not expecting to receive the portables right away; the idea is to build a case to receive them in the future.

In February of this year, the province announced it would provide $6 million to fund eight portables in Saskatoon, four in Swift Current, one in Regina, one in Yorkton and one in White City.

School divisions can also choose to pay for the portables themselves. That's what Horizon did for a portable at Wadena Elementary in 2019.
