HUMBOLDT — While councillor Owen Hopfner has enjoyed his time as a member of Humboldt's city council, he has decided to step away and not run in the upcoming 2020 election.

Hopfner was elected in the 2016 municipal election and has his own landscaping business. He said he would like to focus on the business for a time and make things a little easier for himself.

While the term was difficult on all the councillors with the Broncos bus crash, Hopfner’s niece Dayna Brons died due to the crash.

He said while that was difficult for him and his family, he was proud of how everyone banded together. Hopfner said he had calls from people who wondered how the city got through it the way they did.

“It was just amazing. All the people that came to help. It was unbelievable.”

When Hopfner was working for Saskatchewan Crop Insurance and travelling across the province, he had the opportunity to see the beautiful sports centres and fields that other cities had. That is the first thing you see in a lot of cases, he said, and people are amazed at what is there. He wanted that for Humboldt so he is happy to see the area around the Uniplex get redone this past year.
