Heat warning issued for region this weekend

EAST CENTRAL — Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for the region this weekend.

“Another hot Saturday is forecast with highs in the low-to-mid thirties as the province continues to bake under the influence of an upper ridge,” said the weather service in a statement released the morning of July 10. “Highs near 30 are expected again on Sunday before a cold front moves through the area bringing daytime highs back to the mid-twenties on Monday.”

Extreme heat affects everyone, Environment Canada said. The risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors.

  • Watch for the effects of heat illness: swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and the worsening of some health conditions.
  • Drink plenty of water even before you feel thirsty and stay in a cool place.
  • Check on older family, friends and neighbours. Make sure they are cool and drinking water
  • Seek a cool place such as a tree-shaded area, swimming pool, shower or bath, or air-conditioned spot like a public building.
  • Never leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle.
  • Watch for the symptoms of heat illness: dizziness/fainting; nausea/vomiting; rapid breathing and heartbeat; extreme thirst; decreased urination with unusually dark urine.
