GUERNSEY — A train derailed west of Guernsey, sparking a fire.

Highway #16 between Guernsey and Plunket has been closed because of a complete lack of visibility due to smoke.

Humboldt-Lanigan RCMP are on the scene with CP Rail and Fire. They first gave a public update at 1:30 a.m. on Dec. 9. At that time, they warned that there is no timetable to reopen the road currently, and this could be an extended traffic blockage.

As of 4:30 a.m., the police are asking motorists to avoid any travel near the site until further notice. An alternate route is available south of Plunket on Highway 365 toward Watrous, then north along Highway 668 to Guernsey.

Police said there are no injuries reported at this time.
