CARROT RIVER — Carrot River community members came together and donated their own plants after a series of town flower pots were destroyed by vandalism.

Eight flower pots were vandalized on Main Street in Carrot River, with petunias removed and thrown onto the pavement and sidewalk.

“Three are totally obliterated,” said Kevin Trew, Carrot River’s administrator. “They ripped out, kind of punched them, pulled them, ripped them out of the pots and threw them onto the street.”

The original cost of the program is about $70 per pot, so the vandalism is in total about $560 worth of damage.

“This has been our best year with our potted plant program,” said Trew. “It has been working really well.”

Rather than having to pay that amount again out of town funds, community members came forward and donated their own plants to replace the ones lost.

“We’ve got some succulents and spikes. Some stuff that has been hanging around, that people have left over from the spring,” Trew said.

“That is the bright spot in this whole thing – that people understand how beautiful these are. Just one person who had a problem, I guess.”

He said the town also received an offer of petunias from a resident, but they are going to wait and see if some of the original petunias survive before accepting.

“If they do, then we’ll be good. If not, we’ll take the person up on their offer for some petunias.”

The vandalism occurred between 11 pm on July 20 and 6 am July 21.

The town is encouraging anyone with information on the vandalism to contact Trew at (306) 768-7755.
