CARROT RIVER — Carrot River council is debating the benefits of adding a sidewalk to Third Avenue as part of a paving project on that street.

“Council members would certainly appreciate if anybody has any public input about sidewalks on the rest of Third Avenue,” said Kevin Trew, the town’s administrator.

“Whether we were going to just put a curb and gutter on Third Avenue before we pave it, or if we’re going to put curb, gutter and a sidewalk. There has never been a sidewalk there before and council is deliberating over this. They haven’t made any decisions.”

Council weighed the pros and cons of the idea at their council meeting on June 19.

A decision is expected to be made in July’s council meeting when council reviews the street paving tenders.

Currently council is waiting to see what cost the street paving tender comes in at and if there will even be room in the budget for the sidewalk.

One concern expressed by council was that there are current sidewalks in town that need to be replaced, and this would be an additional sidewalk that would require management.

An argument expressed in favour was that there isn’t a straight sidewalk from one side of town to the other, and this could serve as a pedestrian connector.

As well, one tender offered the town possibility of paying for the sidewalk in 2020 along with the rest of the paving.

Trew said council is looking for public input as they proceed and that citizens can give input by contacting the town directly or speak with any council member.
