Carlton Trail College students receive $76,000 in awards

HUMBOLDT — Carlton Trail College presented 72 scholarships and five bursaries worth $76,000 at an awards ceremony at the Bella Vista Inn.

HUMBOLDT — Carlton Trail College presented 72 scholarships and five bursaries worth $76,000 at an awards ceremony at the Bella Vista Inn.

“These scholarships and bursaries help us all in so many ways,” said Madison Hiebert, who gave a speech on behalf of the award recipients. “This could be seen through the tears that were shed within the CCA [Continuing Care Assistant] class when we received our scholarship letters.”

The awards were presented on Dec. 4.

“I, for one, commute from Viscount every day,” Hiebert said. “My scholarship will help with living expenses throughout the school year and I'm very grateful for that.”

The scholarships and bursaries were funded through donations from individuals, businesses, agencies and organizations. Donations raised by post-secondary institutions in the province are matched by the government-funded Saskatchewan Innovation and Opportunity Scholarship program.

“We understand that there are many challenges that might limit access to education,” said Glenn Hepp, the college’s board chair. He added the donors were at the ceremony celebrating and investing in our students so that they may succeed.

The award recipients are determined through a combination of entrance criteria, academic achievements, the students’ involvement in school and the community, as well as financial need.

Shelley Romanyszyn-Cross, the college’s president, told the students she was pleased the college could provide the awards.

“Our students have worked hard to get where they are today,” she said. “They have demonstrated maturity, resilience and commitment to their studies.”

New this year was a partnership between Carlton Trail College and Saskatchewan Polytechnic that saw enhanced bursary funding made available to women, Indigenous learners, newcomers or persons with disabilities who were enrolled in select post-secondary, trades-based programs.

Five recipients received awards of $4,300 each from the partnership.
