NIPAWIN  — A car was sent approximately 200 feet off the road after colliding with a moose on Highway 35 north of Nipawin.

Nipawin Fire responded to the call in the evening of June 7.

“It looks like the moose impacted the vehicle and, potentially, was carried along for quite some time,” said David Balding, Nipawin’s fire chief. “The vehicle went off road right, and it looks like it spent some time off the ground and landed in a slope, taking out a couple trees, with substantial damage to the car.”

The vehicle had two occupants, who were transported to hospital for minor injuries.

“They were out of the vehicle upon our arrival, standing at the roadside,” Balding said.

The moose did not survive, and was found about 30 feet off the road when emergency services arrived.

The car was examined by the department, who ensured there were no hazards such as fire. The vehicle was then transported from the scene.

“I would suspect it will be written off.”

Nipawin Fire used the opportunity on their Facebook page to remind the public to be wary of wildlife as they travel across the local highways.

“Limit your speed and be wary of animals, especially in darkness because they’re dark coloured animals and they’re not easy to see,” Balding said.

“The unfortunate part of modern car design, by way of making them aerodynamic, the sloped front of them often brings the moose right up on the windshield and can be quite traumatic for the occupants of the vehicle.”
