Sheep producers will once again be gathering in Humboldt for their annual Grasslands Sheep Exhibition at the Humboldt Uniplex on July 20-22.
Included in the weekend will be demonstrations, a 200 head show and sale, as well as many new technological developments in their 24 booth tradeshow, says Executive Director of the Saskatchewan Sheep Development Board Gordon Schroeder.
“We’re using a lot more technology than there was in the past.”
There are around 750 producers with approximately 60,000 ewes currently in Saskatchewan.
Sheep and lamb prices have been strong for years with demand in the Canadian market coming from immigrants and young people in bigger centres, especially out east with immigrants and millenials, says Schroeder.
A strong market is only one reason that producers are starting to get into raising sheep and lamb with low start up costs and a lack of quotas also being attractive reasons to get into the market, says Schroeder.
This has been appealing for young families to get into the sheep and lamb industry, he says.
Producers are also drawn to the industry because of the safety involved in raising sheep and lamb over other livestock.
Getting young people involved through junior events is also a large focus of the sheep show, says Schroeder.
