Annual distribution another success

It was another successful year for the Humboldt Good Neighbour Store with their annual distribution on Dec. 4.

This year’s total was $274,000 given out to 38 organizations around Humboldt and area, says Maureen Doetzel with the Humboldt Good Neighbour Store.

The store runs on donations from the community with sales throughout the year being given out to community organizations.

“There’s always a need and there’s more need now than there has ever been,” says Doetzel, with funding applications coming in all throughout the year. Any organization can apply before Oct. 31 each year to be eligible.

Even the amounts needed have gone up with many organizations needing over $100,000 to survive, says Doetzel.

The Good Neighbour Store’s grand total was diminished a little bit with the purchase of the new building and the taking care of some of their own costs incurred.

However, the total was similar to previous year’s with last year’s total being $283,000 going out to 33 organizations.

The store employs one employee with numerous other volunteers, including students from the local schools.

Representatives from the majority of organizations were present to receive their funds with many of them noting the generosity of both the Good Neighbour Store and the Humboldt community.

One representative, who did not grow up in Humboldt, was surprised at how the Good Neighbour Store model works saying it is a model that is rarely seen outside of Humboldt.

Donna Muench said as she collected their donation for the St. Mary’s Villa Foundation that the Good Neighbour Store is the greatest asset to  Humboldt and the surrounding communities.

“Without them, we and the many non-profit organizations benefiting from them today, could not complete our very important projects, which in turn enhance the community in which we live.”
