A picture tells 1000 words.

That is what the Humboldt Regional Newcomers Centre hopes to have happen with their I Am Here Because It’s Home photography collection; get people talking about life as an immigrant in Humboldt.

The newcomers centre sent out a call for photos for their photographic showcase of Humboldt settlement stories to recent refugees and immigrants to tell their story about life in Humboldt, Saskatchewan, and Canada.

Everyone has a camera on their phones now, says newcomer centre executive director Janine Hart.

While people are always sharing great photos on social media, they did not get many photos at first, says Hart.

Ten people sent in 17 photos which are now on display on the second floor of the Humboldt and District Gallery, with photos coming from a wide age range of participants.

Settlement Workers in Schools associate, Tracey Abel says that students offered photos of class trips and sports games. For older participants, some took photos of events happening around the city.

Photos are a visual time stamp and with the exhibit, other Humboldt residents can see what new residents see.

“What do new people to our community see as capturing Humboldt as their home in their journey. That’s what we were aiming to achieve,” says Hart.

Hopefully that is what people are talking about is what a photo means to them, she says.

The photos will be on display at the Humboldt and District Gallery until June 29 and then will be on display again during the newcomer’s gala event in October.

The project has been funded with the Saskatchewan Lotteries grant through City of Humboldt Leisure Services.
