NIPAWIN — Country music performers competed in Nipawin for $500 with the Saskatchewan Country Music Association (SCMA) North East Country Music Showcase for youth.

The five performances that faced off were Layton Ferster from Debden, Kauren and Raina Soucy from Arborfield, Carolyn Fleming and Abby Sylvestre from Maidstone, Rielle Puddicombe from Shellbrook, and Cassidy Maffenbeier from Flaxcombe.

The first place winner was Maffenbeier, followed by Ferster who won $300. The other three singers were tied for third.

The performers were judged by projection, level of talent and performance on the stage.

“The purpose is to try to draw out young talent,” said Cliff Rose, president of SCMA North East. “We tried to do this locally, and it hasn’t been successful. This went on the webpage then suddenly right across the province we got all kinds of talent.”

Rose said that when judging, they try to find someone they think who can keep going higher in their music career.

This is the first time the SCMA North East chapter had a competition like this in recent years. Rose said they to do other competitions like this in the future.

The concert was held on Oct. 12.
