HUMBOLDT — The results of a fundraising campaign done by Tim Hortons put a smile on the Humboldt District Hospital Foundation’s face.

Humboldt residents bought 11,023 smile cookies from Sept. 16 to 22. For each cookie bought, a dollar was donated to the foundation.

Lorrie Bunko, the foundation’s executive director, said they originally thought the campaign would allow them to buy one of two specialized safe beds for the hospital.

“With this generosity from the public and Tim Hortons, we are able to buy two beds,” she said.

Dan Grywacheski, the Humboldt Tim Hortons franchise owner, said over the past few years, they’ve been in first place as a percentage of sales in the region. Last year, they were also in first for the largest number of cookie sales in the region, raising $8,593.

“This year we were going to try to exceed that goal and we did,” he said.

“By the Thursday, we knew that we were going to just launch it out of the water.”

Bunko said the annual national fundraiser is a great feel-good event for September.

“We always have a lot of fun at this,” she said. “You know what, when you surprise people with a smile cookie, it puts a smile on their face right away.”
