MUENSTER — Muenster School celebrated its top academic and athletic achievers at an end-of-the-year ceremony.
The awards given out to 12 students on June 19 ranged from recognizing athletics and artistic skill to volunteerism, leadership and ambitions for the trades.
Abbie Korte was the recipient of the Lenz-Weber award for athletic and academic achievement. The award honours Muenster veterans Lambert Lenz and Martin Weber – both of whom died in 1944 during the Second World War.
“Abbie Kortie is one of the finest students we’ve had in a number of years,” said teacher Chad Hofmann. “She’s is one of the highest academic achievers in our class … she’s also one of the leaders of the sporting teams in our school.”
Korte also won the female athletic award. This year, she placed 17th of 102 in this year’s cross-country championship, and plays on the school’s volleyball, soccer, softball, hockey and curling teams.
“She is hopefully somebody that our females can look up to in our school, and want to be like her when they get older,” said Hofmann.
BHP’s scholarship program, which provides $2,500 to each winner across 11 schools in the Horizon School Division, recognized student Madisyn Engele.
The mining company looked not only for academic and personal achievement, “but for those students who truly wanted to make a difference in their community,” said community engagement specialist Courage Bear.
Engele won for an essay that outlined her vision to increase workplace representation of visible minorities, Indeginous, and LGBTQ+ folks. In it, Engele said she wrote about “not being quiet when I can give a voice and help to be an example to show acceptance.
“That makes a big difference for the people of [marginalized communities], just to show that they aren't alone,” she said. “One voice can make more voices.”
Engele also received the Muenster Elks scholarship for volunteerism, and the Grade 12 Endeavor award for self-motivation. She said her scholarships “will definitely help” in paying for her education as a hairstylist at Saskatoon’s MC College.
Alex Hinz received the school’s leadership award, meant for students who “aren’t necessarily the loudest person in the room” but “leads be quiet example,” explained teacher Mary Ann Major.
Hinz “gets the job done. He's also a person who, [being in] a leadership role, can come under fire and criticism – but they handle it in the most positive way possible at their age,” said Major.
Hinz was also awarded the Grade 11 Endeavor award for self-discipline not often seen at the Grade 11 level and the St. Peters Accelerated Scholarship, which will allow him to pursue two classes at Muenster’s St. Peter’s College in his Grade 12 year.
“That’ll be nice. it will help lighten my work load for when I enter university,” Hinz said. He plans to take Agriculture business or agronomy at the University of Saskatchewan.
His awards were “a nice pat on the back,” he said.
“I don't want to pump my tires, but I did work hard this year, and often was helping people, so I'm glad I got some recognition for it. There were lots of people that could have won this one.”
