HUMBOLDT — When Grade 2 student Makayla Futoransky visited the emergency room earlier this month, she discovered something was horribly wrong — there were absolutely no toys or games for kids.

“She felt afraid, and kind of bored,” her teacher, Beth Gebauer, said Makayla explained to her class at Humboldt Public School. “So then the classes decided, ‘hey, what can we do to get toys?’”

Their answer was an ice-tea sale within the school on June 13. The students wrote letters to Co-op grocery store and had their product donated.

“Then they made posters, made announcements, and learned how to count money so they could get change back,” Gebauer said.

The class made $62.75 for the Humboldt Hospital Foundation, who will pick and purchase the toys based on how easily they can be sanitized, Gebaurer said.

During a resulting class trip to the emergency room on June 18, “we looked around and saw there really were no toys,” said Gebaurer. “[The foundation] said they were going to do some searching to see the best toy they could find.
