Adjudicators impressed with passion at Humboldt's On Stage dance festival

HUMBOLDT — The adjudicators tasked with judging the approximately 800 dancers at the On Stage festival said they were impressed with the competitors.

"There was so much versatility and so much talent, especially for a small local community,” said Paige Sealey, an adjudicator from New York City. “I just think it’s really inspiring coming to a place where people are extremely passionate about what they do, and not necessarily just here to win, but here because they have such a genuine love of the arts and dance.”

The festival was held at the Uniplex from April 11 to 14.

Lindsay White-Thornton, an adjudicator from Edmonton, said she was impressed with the passion of the dancer, something she said couldn’t be taught.

“I think one of the things that really impresses me about Humboldt and the studios that have come from around Humboldt – this is the third time I’ve been here now – is that they all they have that in spades.”

Angela Quinn, an adjudicator from Kelowna, said it was her second time at the festival.

“I’m so thrilled to see how the talent has evolved a little bit and gotten stronger all around as a whole.”

Sealey said when she’s adjudicating, she’s trying to find people that have the total package.

“It’s an equal mix of technique and training and also performance, quality, emotion, understanding of dynamics, texture and musicality,” she said. “It’s kind of like the performance side and the technical side, all mixed into one.”

All three said they were impressed with how well the festival was organized.
