Provincial, Western Canadian, and Canadian champions from Humboldt were celebrated on Jan. 30 at the City of Humboldt’s Awards Recognition Night. The night is hosted in partnership with the Humboldt Broncos and honours the athletes during the first period of the Broncos game.

While the Humboldt Broncos were busy picking up a win on the ice on Jan. 30, both the Broncos and the City of Humboldt took some time during the first intermission to celebrate other Humboldt winners during the annual Awards Recognition evening.

The celebration featured provincial, western Canadian, and national champions, all within the last year, and all from Humboldt.

“It was good to see so many recipients recognized at the ceremony and so many people out on a stormy day to be there help us celebrate,” noted Mayor Rob Muench in an email interview.

“I mentioned to those recognized, not to forget where you came from and who helped you get to where you are. Parents, coaches, and volunteers deserve our thanks for all they do for our community and it’s athletes. It is also important that the city does its part to provide facilities for our citizens to use.”

Included during the celebration were the HCI Mohawks boys soccer team, HCI Mohawks boys volleyball team, Humboldt Mosquito AAA Dodgers, swimmers from the Humboldt Hammerheads, gymnasts from Calico Gymnastics Club, members of the Humboldt Special Olympics, as well as Rylan Marianchuk, and Jayden Huls who helped Saskatchewan win gold at the 2017 Canada Summer Games, and the pair plus Broncos defenseman Morgan Gobeil, who were part of the Muenster Midget AAA Red Sox’s Western Canadian title.

Muench noted seeing so many athletes celebrated for their tremendous accomplishments, is a testament to the level of athletic talent the City of Humboldt has.

“Humboldt has been fortunate to have a proud history of successful athletes. At the last Humboldt and District Sports Hall of Fame Dinner, I said it must be something in our water. It’s actually the dedication of the families, coaches, volunteers, and the community that surrounds them that brings this success.”

Of course, it is also a reflection of the multifaceted abilities of Humboldt’s athletes that they were able to win titles in a variety of different disciplines, noted Muench.

“Humboldt has been fortunate to have a number of community clubs and groups to promote participating in a number of sports. This participation combined with dedication encourages success.”

Of course, the evening could not be possible without the support of the Broncos, notes Muench, who says it is an important partnership.

“This event helps recognize the dedication of athletes as well as coaches and volunteers. Having the event at the Bronco games shares their success with the greater community. I would like to thank the Broncos for partnering with the City of Humboldt on this.”
