Humboldt’s newest doctor is excited to be practicing in such a community focused town.

Doctor Aileen Hamilton says that she and her family wanted to stay in Humboldt after she completed her rural block of her residency during November and December working about both Humboldt clinics.

Hamilton will be based out of Humboldt Family Physicians but she is happy to be able to treat her patients at the Humboldt and District Hospital Complex as well.

“If you have a family doctor that you have a good relationship with, who knows all your history, if you need to get admitted into hospital, you can be admitted under your family doctor.”

That practice is going out of fashion, says Hamilton, since people are often managed by family doctor but admitted under an internal medicine specialist.

Hamilton says she found that a very attractive aspect of her position in Humboldt.

“That completes a comprehensive care model where you look after everyone all the time and you really get to know each other.”

The Humboldt community was something that drew Hamilton to the area with all the family amenities that she wanted in a good sized centre, especially for her two year old child.

“We had a list of things that we wanted...I wanted there to be a swimming pool and groceries and resources and things but I didn’t want it to be as big as Saskatoon.”

After her residency in family medicine at the University of Saskatchewan, Hamilton knew that she wanted to stay in the province.

You get used to how things are done in the province, she says. After that it is more difficult to transfer your life.

Even though Health Regions are going to be a thing of the past, Hamilton says staying in the Saskatoon Health Region was on her list of things she wanted from her new position.

As a practitioner of family medicine, Hamilton’s job as a family doctor “runs the whole gamut,” she says, from deliveries of babies all the way to end of life care.

“I hope I can offer that  kind of care to everyone. So instead of old fashioned family medicine where we look after you, your whole family, we’ll look after you if your sick or well.”

Hamilton has been happy with the media attention she has been receiving but she says her patients will get to know her pretty quick.

Hamilton is originally from Vancouver Island, B.C. started her education in Biochemistry at the University of Victoria before studying medicine in Dublin, Ireland at the University College Dublin.

There are approximately 14 physicians in the Humboldt area.
