The Humboldt Good Neighbour Store made the holidays brighter for 33 local organizations with their 2016 disbursement.

Local organizations applied for funding through the Good Neighbour Store before Oct. 31 and stated the specific project the funds would go towards.

A grand total of $283,000 was handed out at an afternoon of coffee and cake on Dec. 5.

Maureen Doetzel with the Good Neighbour Store invited a representative from each organization up to say where the money is going.

All the organizations were very grateful for the funds and raved about the good the Good Neighbour Store has done over the years.

Lorrie Bunko with the Humboldt and District Hospital Foundation says that they are so fortunate to be receiving $85,000 from such a generous organization. Over the years, the Foundation has received a total of $585,542, says Bunko.

The Humboldt Regional Newcomers Centre was also a very grateful recipient of $4,000 from the Good Neighbour Store.

Executive Director, Janine Hart, says that this money will go towards developing a new family learning group for students and their parents in the new year.

Hart says they will also be looking to fund more programming within the region, as well as within Humboldt.

“That will go a long way to supporting some new community connections initiatives.”

Doetzel says that these generous donations are all thanks to their 180 volunteers, including their board members, who keep the organization running smoothly, as well as donors and shoppers who use the Good Neighbour Store to donate and purchase gently used items.

The Good Neighbour Store started in 1992 and through their annual disbursements has given away almost $2.56 million to date.
