The Communities in Bloom and murals committees have teamed up to put up a temporary art installation at the old CN railway station, with the help of the Humboldt & District Museum.

The project works like this: anybody in Humboldt can contact the museum and tell staff their country of heritage, and each country that gets named will have a flag hung up in the window of the CN station. It’s a beautification project that’s also meant to celebrate heritage.

“It’s mostly as a beautification project, so (the purpose is) to make it look nice. It’s been sitting there for awhile,” said Leah Terry with the museum. “And also to celebrate the multiculturalism in Humboldt because the train station played such a large role in many people coming to Humboldt. It was the first contact, where they came through … so we’d like to celebrate the history of that and the multiculturalism.”

The project will also include a small plaque with the history of the rail station.

The deadline for getting your country in is Aug. 31. Terry doesn’t know yet how long the art installation will be up, but she said it will be there through Culture Days in September. It will definitely be taken down before winter hits. Anybody interested can stop in at the museum, call them at 682-5226, or email Terry at info.humboldtmuseum@sasktel.net.

“It would be nice for people who have never stopped by the railway station to maybe stop by and take a look,” Terry said.  “It would be nice if people stopped by and read the history of the CN railway station and to see the different flags of countries of people in Humboldt, which is kind of cool.”

Right now the museum staff aren’t planning any other similar projects, but will think about doing something similar again depending on how this art project goes.
