MONTREAL - A former judge who was found guilty of murdering his wife could find out within days whether he will be released pending an appeal of the conviction.
Jacques Delisle was found guilty by a jury last month of shooting Nicole Rainville to death in 2009.
The 77-year-old Delisle is believed to be the first Canadian judge to be convicted of first-degree murder.
Justice Richard Wagner said Wednesday he will do everything he can to rule within days on whether Delisle should be released.
Lawyer Jacques Larochelle told Wagner his client should be released pending an appeal of the conviction.
Larochelle argued that Delisle is not a flight risk, is not a danger to reoffend, that he had a blemish-free past and that he took care of Rainville for years.
Delisle's trial heard that Rainville was suffering from partial paralysis and that the accused wanted to move in with his mistress.
