Marie (nee Wirtz) Winkel April 5, 1914- June 13, 2012 It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that the family of Mrs. Marie (nee Wirtz) Winkel of St. Mary’s Villa, Humboldt, SK, announces her passing, on Wednesday, June 13, 2012, at her residence surrounded by her loving family. She was 98 years of age. Marie was born on April 5, 1914, to Louis and Elizabeth (nee Wourms) Wirtz at home on their farm in the Pilger district. She attended Canvasback and Old Pilger schools. After completing Grade 8, Marie stayed home and helped on the Wirtz family farm. At the age of 15, she pursued her love of sewing by taking a correspondence course. In her teen years Marie met the love of her life, Joseph “Joe” Winkel, and after a long courtship, they were married on July 14, 1940, in Peterson. The Winkels lived in Pilger for 25 years, and it was here that four children, two daughters and two sons, were born to them; however one daughter died in infancy. Marie was a seamstress out of her home and sewed for many people in the area. She also had a special talent and took great pride in decorating wedding cakes for friends, family and surrounding communities. In 1965, Marie and Joseph moved into Humboldt where she started working at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital as a seamstress for the Elizabethan nuns and in dietary and later in laundry until she retired in 1979. Marie kept busy by tending to her nice, large garden which she would then preserve and can for the winter. In her spare time, she enjoyed bowling which she took up after retirement, watching baseball especially the Blue Jays, curling and quilting with her sisters. Marie and Joseph went on various trips to Las Vegas, Reno, Minnesota, Alaska, White Horse and quite often to B.C. to visit with their children and relatives. She especially loved going to rodeos with Joseph in their Datsun. In 1999, Marie and Joseph moved into the East Side Manor and in 2004, she joined Joseph at St. Mary’s Villa. Marie will be lovingly remembered by three children and six grandchildren: David (Kathy) Winkel of Prince George, BC, and family, Clinton (Julie) Winkel, Jay (Tobi) Winkel, and Kim (Chris) Reed; Bruce (Gladys) Winkel of Saskatoon, SK; and Sharon (Larry) Renshaw of Thunder Bay, ON, and family, Kelly (Rob) Hatfield, Kari Renshaw, and Ryan (Gina) Renshaw; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters and two brothers: Lorraine (Alois) Jaeb, Leander (Theresa) Wirtz, Lavina (John) Jackman, and Severn (Chris) Wirtz; sister-in-law, Marion Wirtz; and by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by his her husband, Joseph Winkel; one daughter, Jeanette Winkel (in infancy); daughter-in-law, Sharon (nee Collins) Winkel; parents, Louis and Elizabeth (nee Wourms) Wirtz; three brothers and five sisters: Joseph Wirtz (in infancy), Rosella (Ed) Cody, Evelyn (Emmit) Cody, Annie (Leonard) Lohman, Marcel Wirtz (in childhood), Roman Wirtz, Bernice Wirtz (in childhood), and Dolores (Lukan) Grieman; brothers-in-law: Dennis Lukan and Joe Grieman; and by numerous in-laws of the Winkel family. The Prayer Service for Marie was held at St. Augustine R.C. Church, Humboldt, on Friday, June 15, 2012, at 7:30 p.m., led by Marlene VanDresar and organist Denise Germain. Scripture reader was Audrey White, and the eulogy was delivered by James Winkel. The Funeral Mass for Marie was offered at St. Augustine R.C. Church on Saturday, June 16, 2012, at 10:00 a.m., concelebrated by Fr. Emile April and Fr. Bernard Stauber. Others taking part were: Audrey White, cross bearer; Yvonne Cody, scripture reader; Gladys Winkel, intentions; Bruce and Gladys Winkel, gift bearers. An honor guard was formed by the St. Augustine Parish CWL members. Honorary pallbearers were “all those who shared in Marie’s life.” Active pallbearers were Randy Lukan, Aaron Lukan, Daryl Lukan, Randy White, Joseph “Buddy” Lohman and Leon Winkel. Interment took place at St. Augustine R.C. Cemetery, Humboldt, SK. Memorial donations may be directed to the St. Mary’s Villa Foundation. Condolences to the family may be emailed to slfc@sasktel.net.
